Buying Frozen Food In Bulk and The Death Of A Freezer

A few months ago my parents gave us an old chest freezer. We put it in our basement and instantly fell in love with it. The thought of getting a free freezer that was less than 3 years old and having the ability to buy more items in bulk(when the prices are cheap was appealing). Now mind you this wasn’t the best chest freezer out on the market but it was serviceable.

What I Like About The Chest Freezer:

1) It was fairly compact – this was ideal because I wanted to put it in my basement, but didn’t want it to take up a lot of room.

2) As I said earlier the ability to buy larger quantities of meat and other freezable items when they are at a good price.

This simply isn’t being frugal it is one of the best ways to save money. It also allows for better budgeting because we can plan our meals for the week, and do not have to be running to the store every day. In addition it also allows us to cut our grocery spending as we find when we go shopping we usually only buy milk, eggs, and fresh fruit and vegetables as many of the other items we have in our freezer or can good pantry.

This is when things started to go wrong, after about 6 months of no issues whatsoever, one day I walk into the basement and see a small puddle of water on the floor. Thankfully the freezer must have just quit running as everything was still frozen except a few frozen pizzas that were on top.

We rushed and packed everything in the upstairs freezer. Will we get another freezer for the basement. Sure but only when one is on sale.  Thankfully I will pay for it by writing personal finance articles.

I really do believe you should pickup a freezer to store larger quantities of items when they are on sale.
