Simple Personal Finance
Since I have started writing about personal finance I have come to realize that personal finance is a rather simple subject. Sometimes it is even hard to write about finance advice. It boils down to doing those things we all know we should be doing but don’t do.
It is about controlling our wants and determining what we really need.
When we start struggling with our personal finances we will often start making decisions that may not be the best ones for us, but because we panic we will often make these poor choices.
How to we start planning to resolve these issues?
The first step to a successful personal finance plan starts with budgeting. You have to get yourself on a budget no matter how painful it may be. Setting up a budget allows you to see where your money goes, how much of it goes to what categories(food, entertainment etc).
Often I will put together a spreadsheet that will help me maintain my budget for the month. This works well but if you need something a little more complex you can buy a personal finance program which is a software that you can install on your computer. This should help get your finances on track. Just make sure you read software reviews prior to making any large software purchase. There is also some freeware which is free software you can use to track your finances.
After you get your spending in order you can signup for a personal finance magazine, which will contain many valuable articles you can learn from. One such magazine is Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.
Another great place you can learn to better manager your finances is online. The web can provide everything from newsletters, articles, software, forums, blogs and directories all related to personal finance. All of the above your help you cover the basics, providing many tips. Providing you with a solid education.
Lastly you may want to attend personal finance workshops that will allow you to learn a lot of information packed into a few short days. Dave Ramsey offers such workshops called Financial Peace University.
